Corrosion causes huge financial losses across a wide range of industries. According to NACE International, the global cost of corrosion in 2017 is estimated to be EUR 2.01 trillion. Sectors such as energy, construction and infrastructure need to protect against the gradual weakening of their assets and seek anti-corrosion coatings that also prolong the useful life of a structure and boost its productivity.
How legislation is affecting the development of epoxy paints. By Martin Gerlitz, Huntsman Advanced Materials, Switzerland.
UV-curable water-borne coatings are attracting more attention due to the combined advantages of UV-curing systems and water-borne coatings, which include matting ease, handling efficiency, the fact they are monomer free, and offer a faster manufacturing throughput. However, good chemical resistance and physical drying can be a challenge. Two new approaches have turned this around, and offer good chemical resistance, hardness, and physical drying for clear and pigmented coatings.
Coatings can have functionality beyond their protection and decoration of substrates. Functional coatings additionally offer a variety of smart behaviours and value-adding performance to a surface. This overview explains the underlying physical and/or chemical processes for a few key types.
